The Call to go digging....
Maybe you didn't intend to be a digger. Your life was just fine. You liked old stuff and had done some collecting. You had heard about others that did it. And then it happened. The opportunity to be involved in a dump found during construction and you had permission. Well...You have to answer the call because it doesn't come often if ever.....
"Now what am I looking for again? Are we actually digging under a sidewalk? It's all dark and dirty down here. Are you sure we know what we're doing? Wait...There is this red and gray layer of stuff. I see rust...I see glass...let me scratch around a bit....There is all kinds of stuff down here!"
And so it goes. Buried treasure. it's irresistible to a collector personality. The stuff starts coming out and you have no idea what it's worth. You only know it's old and buried and somehow still survives under 3 feet of topsoil. Then you notice some of the bottles have writing in the glass and some of that's pretty cool. They are in all shapes and colors. You find old shoes, dishes, flatware, toys and dolls. You don't realize it but you are HOOKED that quickly. |
You have to follow where it leads and sometimes it just keeps going. Your partner watches up top for what you throw out in your shovel full. And then you trade off taking turns in the hole so you both have the experience of discovery. But you keep going. It can get scary. Your partner needs to watch for cracks in the bank and be ready to pull you out if it suddenly collapses.
In the end you have a pile of stuff that hasn't seen the light of day in over 100 years!
Then it takes over your life. You have to dig it while you can before the building starts. You go every weekend. You go rain or shine or freeze. You bring your own lunch so you don't have to lose time finding food and you sit in the hole and eat. You come home cold and weary and dirty. You show your finds to the family and they just look at you like you have gone crazy.

Your collection builds and you see so much variety. Do you like the beers? the whiskey flasks? the medicines? How can you not love the crockery? All the shapes and colors? Then each one cleans up different so that is also part of the adventure. But for now, you keep everything and look them all up during the week to see what may have value.

All I can say is "good luck"! This is just the beginning.....
